Dr Robin Mann is Head of the Centre for Organisational Excellence Research, Massey University, New Zealand, Chairman of the Global Benchmarking Network, Board Member New Zealand Business Excellence Foundation, Co-Founder of BPIR.com – a best practice website resource, Founder of the International Best Practice Competition and New Zealand Best Practice Competition and Founder of the TRADE Best Practice Benchmarking Methodology which was initially developed for the New Zealand Benchmarking Club. The TRADE methodology is the cornerstone of the Dubai Government Excellence Program’s “Dubai We Learn” initiative whereby Robin has overseen 35 benchmarking projects since 2015. Robin serves as a Business Excellence/Productivity Advisor to many countries (recently supporting Bangladesh, Pakistan and Mongolia on their capability building programs for raising productivity and serving as a technical coordinator for the Abu Dhabi Government Excellence Award and Mohammed bin Rashid Government Excellence Award). Robin is currently overseeing a) a research project involving 30 countries to understand how countries are using business excellence to drive productivity and nation building b) investigating the resources and infrastructure used by organisations that have won national business excellence awards. Robin has been awarded the Harrington/Ishikawa Medal for contributions to the advancement of quality in the Asia Pacific region. Robin is originally from the UK where he obtained his PhD in TQM at Liverpool University in 1992.

- 1988-1992: Lucky enough to undertake one of the first PhDs in TQM in the world.
- 1989: Founded Liverpool University’s Post-Graduate Club – the start of many clubs.
- 1993 – Winner of 2nd place in the “European Quality Award for PhD Theses 1993”, awarded by the European Foundation for Quality Management.
- 1992-1995: Process Improvement Manager at Burton’s Biscuits (Edinburgh, UK). Led the implementation of Statistical Process Control throughout the plant.
- 1995-1998: Working at Leatherhead Food International. I initiated, developed and managed the “Food and Drinks Industry Benchmarking and Self-Assessment Initiative” within the UK. In total, more than 400 companies (from SMEs to major international companies) became involved and benefited from its various activities. This included starting the Food and Drinks Industry Benchmarking Club, and running the first benchmarking conferences within the Food and Drinks Industry.
- 1998 – Employed at Massey University, Lecturer in Quality Management
- 2000: Founded and became Director of the New Zealand Benchmarking Club (operated between 2000 to 2004 and helped the member organisations to improve by an average of 50 points per annum, as assessed against the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence)
- 2001 – Founded COER and became the Head of the Centre.
- 2002: Developed the concept for BPIR.com, a benchmarking and best practice web site resource in 1999/2000, and launched it with Steve Welch in April 2002.
- 2003 – Launched a Fit for the Future Programme in New Zealand (seminars held in 10 regions)
- 2004 – Founded Australasia’s Inaugural Benchmarking Conference (more than 100 delegates attended)
- 2004 – Commissioned to undertake the first major review of the Australian Business Excellence Framework (ABEF). The project included the first ever international comparison of how Business Excellence models are deployed to maximise their engagement and use (16 countries involved).
- 2004 – Played an instrumental role in starting the Business Capability Partnership. A partnership of New Zealand’s key business service providers that aim to raise the capability of New Zealand’s businesses.
- 2004 – Invited as an expert to meetings of the Global Excellence Model Council (a meeting between the bodies that are the custodians of unique and internationally recognised business excellence models).
- 2004 – Elected as Chairman of the Global Benchmarking Network.
- 2005 – Appointed Associate Dean of TQM and Benchmarking at the e-TQM College, Dubai.
- 2005-2007: I developed and oversaw the implementation of the self-assessment and benchmarking processes used by Sheikh SAQR Government Excellence Program in the UAE.
- 2006: Formed BPIR.com Limited with Steve Welch. This was a new company spun out of Massey University to run BPIR.com.
- 2006: Brought the World Congress for TQM to Australasia for the first time. It attracted more than 350 delegates from over 30 countries, with more than 130 papers being presented.
- 2007: Substantially revised the “TRADE” best practice benchmarking (a unique methodology first used by the New Zealand Benchmarking Club designed to deliver results quickly). TRADE is now used in 9 countries: Bahrain, Canada, Chile, Fiji, Kuwait, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and United Arab Emirates.
- 2008: Business Excellence Tools launched with Michael Voss of PYXIS Consulting to promote business excellence tools such as COER’s benchmarking and performance excellence self-assessment (BPES), which has been used by more than 300 organisations since 2001.
- 2008: Undertook the most comprehensive to-date world wide study into benchmarking with over 450 companies participating from over 40 countries. The research was supported by the Global Benchmarking Network and the findings were used to guide the future strategy of the GBN and the national bodies it represents.
- 2009: Developed the world’s first certification scheme for benchmarking to professionalise the benchmarking field. This certification scheme enables professionals to graduate from “Benchmarking Awareness” to “Benchmarking Mastery”. Over 1000 professionals have now been certified at the elementary level.
- 2009: Appointed as the Chief Expert for Business Excellence by the Asian Productivity Organisation for a project to review the value and impact of business excellence in Asia. The study focused on five countries: India, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. The findings from this research are now being used by the Asian Productivity Organisation and its 22 member countries to guide their national business excellence strategies.
